Of Note

O’Connor says, “Appalachia is the original melting pot of our country featuring more diverse styles of American music than just about anywhere […] Growing up in the O’Connor musical household, Christmas time was a wondrous mixture of Christmas carols, fiddling, bluegrass and other traditional American music. And that is the spirit of An Appalachian Christmas.

The Santa Fe Symphony and Chorus commissioned Mark O’Connor’s Fiddle Concerto in 1992, which has since become one of the most-performed violin concertos written in the last half-century.

It took only 17 months for the Mark O’Connor Band to go “from zero to GRAMMY,” taking home the award for Best Bluegrass Album on their debut Coming Home.

The Mark O'Connor Band

Mark O’Connor Band’s very first performance took place at the legendary Walnut Valley Bluegrass Festival in Winfield, Kansas in 2015, the same event where Mark won national competitions on three instruments as a young teenager. In 2017 – less than a year and a half later – the new band took home the GRAMMY Award for Best Bluegrass Album for their debut recording, Coming Home.
