At just 12 years of age\, she joins her teacher and renowned soloist Ida Kavafian for Bach’s Concerto for Two Violins\, plus a solo performance with HIMARI Yoshimura for Henryk Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto No. 1 in F# Minor. The program concludes with Holst’s The Planets\, featuring The Symphony Chorus Ensemble with narration by Santa Fe Institute Professors Cris Moore and Chris Kempes. \nJoin us for a FREE 30-minute preview talk about the performance presented from The Lensic stage by Maestro Figueroa at 3:00 PM. \nOF NOTE! \n\nIn addition to being a composer\, Henryk Wieniawski was also a virtuoso violinist often compared to Paganini. He refused to let his heart condition slow down his frenetic pace of worldwide concert tours. He was about to embark on a new tour when his illness worsened; he died a few months shy of his 45th birthday.\nA discussion with friends about astrology spurred the composer Gustav Holst’s interest in the subject\, and this led to The Planets. His friend\, the writer Clifford Bax\, said that Holst was “a remarkably skilled interpreter of horoscopes.” The composer said\, “I only study things that suggest music to me…recently the character of each planet suggested lots to me\, and I have been studying astrology fairly closely.” According to his biographer\, Michael Short\, the composer was reading What is a Horoscope?\,  a booklet by a British astrologer named Alan Leo\, when he began composing the piece.\nAfter Bach’s death in 1750\, his son Carl Philipp Emanuel inherited some of the original performance parts of the Concerto for Two Violins\, and it is believed that he also had the original handwritten score. The surviving parts (without the complete score) were later owned by the music collector Georg Poelchau and eventually were placed in the Berlin State Library. After World War II\, when the library was damaged and most of its contents destroyed or lost\, the documents disappeared for years—and miraculously resurfaced in Poland several decades later.\n\n[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text] \nTHANK YOU!\n \n[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column width=”1/2″][vc_column_text] \nThe Santa Fe Symphony OrchestraGuillermo Figueroa\, Music DirectorIda Kavafian\, ViolinHIMARI\, Violin \n\nPROGRAM\nJOHANN SEBASTIAN BACHConcerto for Two Violins in D Minor\, BWV 1043I.  VivaceII. Also on the program are Beethoven’s Leonore Overture and Gina Gillie’s Philharmonic Fanfare for brass ensemble. \nJoin us for a FREE 30-minute preview talk about the performance presented from The Lensic stage by Maestro Figueroa at 3:00 PM. \nOF NOTE! \n\nThere are three versions of the overture to Leonore—the original version of the opera Fidelio—plus a fourth one that is now used in Beethoven’s only opera. Overture No. 1 was composed for a production in Prague that never took place. The second overture was used for the opera’s premiere in 1805\, but its difficulty (particularly for the wind players) led to the third iteration\, which is being performed at this concert. \nProkofiev played the solo piano part at the 1921 premiere of his Piano Concerto No. 3 with the Chicago Symphony. At first\, the piece was not popular\, but the following year\, a performance in Paris conducted by Serge Koussevitzky received rave reviews\, cementing the work’s place in the classical canon.\nMozart’s Symphony No. 40 has been referred to as the “Great G minor symphony\,” to distinguish it from the “Little G minor symphony\,” No. 25. The latter was written in 1773\, when the composer was only 17; No. 40 was written 15 years later.
