German composer George Frideric Handel, who spent much of his adult compositional life as the toast of London (eventually becoming a naturalized English citizen), showed his musical gifts early in life, much to the dismay of his father, who wished him to become a lawyer. Though he made some forays into the study of law, his production of operas and oratorios were much more successful, and today Handel is considered one of the greatest of Baroque composers.
