Artistic Director, Juan Siddi, of Juan Siddi Arte Flamenco Society, has been described in the Santa Fe New Mexican as “a bundle of beautiful energy tempered by technique and taste.” His high-profile presence in Santa Fe, where he teaches, choreographs and performs, garnered him the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2011. Born and raised in Frankfurt, Germany of mixed heritage (Italian father, Spanish mother), Juan was immersed early in the culture of flamenco whose sonorous music he heard at home. His influential teachers were Rebeca Carmona (Darmstadt) and la Tani (Barcelona). After debuting at the age of nine, six years later Juan was a soloist in tablaos, memorably at Al Andalus, Frankfurt’s important flamenco center.
By 18, Juan was dancing and choreographing for Compañía Flamenca Alhama and Noches De Amor, performing in Vienna, Berlin, and Zurich at the prestigious Bienal de Flamenco in Sevilla and in a command performance attended by His Majesty Juan Carlos King of Spain. He then became principal male dancer with Rafael Cortés giving concerts for five years throughout Europe.
At the invitation of Maria Benitez, Juan took his first steps in the U.S., joining her Santa Fe Teatro Flamenco troupe in 2002. Extensive U.S. touring was capped by performances at New York City’s Joyce Theater. Juan was principal dancer/ choreographer for the farewell production, Maria Benitez: Yesterday, Today & Tonorrow. Juan appeared as a guest artist/ choreographer and was the Artistic Director for Theatre Flamenco San Francisco, with American Bolero Dance Company in New York City and Aspen Santa Fe Ballet.
In 2007, Siddi launched his own company in Santa Fe, NM directing and touring both nationally and internationally in venues and festivals such as: the Joyce Theater in New York City, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and the International Dance Festival in Doha, Qatar. Broadcast performances include NBC, Telemundo and Al Jazeera.
