About Rimsky-Korsakov

Russian composer Nikolai Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov spent his life balancing careers as a teacher of composition and orchestration, a member of the Russian navy (both as an officer and, later, a civilian), and a composer with a mission to promote nationalist Russian music through his own writing and his orchestrations of others’ works. His treatise on orchestration remains a musicological staple, and the programmatic suite Scheherazade is one of the most instantly recognizable works for violin and orchestra.
