Being a dedicated music student requires certain skills—dedication, attention to detail, and a deep appreciation for the art form. But many highly disciplined young players miss out on the social side of life. Playing in ensembles with other young musicians helps bridge that gap. Making music with others encourages friendships and cooperation between peers, while building the student’s ability to work in teams and eventually, take on a leadership role in the ensemble. Indeed, for any orchestra to be successful, the interpersonal relationships between its musicians and the conductor are built on mutual respect. It is no different in a student ensemble.
We strive to place our students with peers who are similar in age/grade, as well as musical experience and maturity. Doing so creates not only a common ground for building long term friendships, it helps to foster a strong sense of camaraderie and shared fun. The ensembles that each of instructors teach have a target age group, but when we include the outliers, each group can potentially span five grade levels.
