the instrument project
Interested in renting an instrument rather than buying one for your still-growing child? We have a large inventory of fractional and full-size instruments available to rent. We are not a music store, however, so we have limited quantities of certain instruments and sizes.
- String instruments include the instrument, bow, and case. Accessories such as a shoulder rest/sponge or cello strap may also be included if needed, and if the desired accessory is in stock.
- Mariachi instruments (vihuela, guitar, guitarron) come with the instrument and case. Woodwind and Brass instruments come with the instrument and case.
Monthly payments occur on the 15th of every month until the instrument is returned. Rental costs vary according to a student’s level of financial aid. All rentals are first-come, first-served. Click here for more information.
Terms and Conditions
Once you fill out an inquiry form, you will be contacted by a Santa Fe Symphony employee with instrument information, and the rental forms. All rentals are required to be set up as auto payments. When filling out the instrument rental form, you will be required to enter your credit card information and will be charged on the 15th business day of each month. The instrument brand, serial number, model, and full replacement cost will be provided to you at the time you pick up your instrument. Rent is separate from tuition and can run year-round.
Optional Insurance
Optional insurance is $4.00 a month and can be added to your monthly payment. It covers a replacement instrument of comparable quality, condition, and value as determined by The Santa Fe Symphony. Explanation of the insurance follows:
- An instrument totally destroyed by fire or other accident, or theft occurring not through the fault and/ or malicious intent of the Lessee will be replaced by The Santa Fe Symphony provided that the theft, loss or destruction is reported to the proper authorities, and a written police or fire report is made within twenty-four (24) hours of the event. The Santa Fe Symphony will require a copy of this report documenting any loss or destruction.
- The insurance does not cover any instrument taken outside of the state of New Mexico. Instruments which are taken out of the state of New Mexico are taken at the Lessee’s risk.
- Any claim for replacement shall not be construed to alter or diminish the terms of the original Rental Agreement. This coverage will be void if you are in default of your Rental Agreement. Your payments must be current.
- IMPORTANT: Under no circumstances will insurance coverage apply to an instrument which has been subject to intentional or malicious damage or destruction by the Lessee.
- The Santa Fe Symphony shall be the sole judge in all cases.
Maintenance and Repairs
- When you rent an instrument, you assume the cost of repairs for damage to the instrument while in your care. Damage will be assessed at the time of return of your instrument. This does not include normal wear and tear.
- Your instrument should be maintained by following the care instructions included in your rental packet. You will be required to purchase your own cleaning kit. If care instructions are not followed, it could lead to damage to the instrument.
The Instrument Project accepts donations of quality instruments for our students.
Donations will be accepted if the instrument is of good quality, new or gently-used, needed in our inventory, and fully playable without repairs needed. Fractional-sized string instruments are our area of greatest need; we do not accept pianos.
If you have an instrument that you would like to donate, please contact Marilyn LaCome at mlacome@santafesymphony.org to learn more and to schedule a time to stop by our office.

WANT TO HELP OUT?
Each year, we spend thousands of dollars on fractional (child-sized) instruments for our students. High-quality childrens’ instruments cost between $500-$1,000 per purchase.
- If you’d like to make a donation to support a child’s instrument, please contact Laura Witte at lwitte@santafesymphony.org.
