L’Histoire du soldat (“The Soldier’s Tale”) reeks of the angry disillusion generated by World War I. The tale is a bitter one: The soldier―it does not matter which country or army he is from―battles the devil and even wins a few rounds, but the ultimate triumph must belong to the devil. At its first performance on September 28, 1918, L’Histoire was a great success, but Stravinsky’s hopes for financial success from a tour were quickly dashed: The flu epidemic of 1918 hit Switzerland, affecting several of the performers, and the tour had to be abandoned.
The music to L’Histoire du soldat is rife with changing time signatures; therefore, it is commonly performed with a conductor. It is scored for seven instruments (clarinet, bassoon, cornet, trombone, violin, double bass and percussion); four speaking parts (the Devil, the Soldier, a Princess, and an unseen reader), and in the original version, a dancer. This is not a play, an opera, or a ballet, but more accurately a theater piece, and Stravinsky hoped that with such a small number of performers, L’Histoire could be taken on tour and performed in villages.
David Felberg, violin
Praised by The Santa Fe New Mexican for his “fluid phrases, rich focused tone, rhythmic precision, and spot-on intonation,” Violinist David Felberg, an Albuquerque native, is Concertmaster of The Santa Fe Symphony and Associate Concertmaster of the New Mexico Philharmonic, and performs with Santa Fe Pro Musica. He is also the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of Chatter, a groundbreaking series, exploring both new and old music, that produces over 60 performances per year.
Terry Pruitt, bass
Terry Pruitt is principal bass with The Santa Fe Symphony. He also plays bass with the New Mexico Philharmonic. Originally from Alton, Illinois, Terry became hooked on the double bass at the age of ten. While completing his degree in music performance at Southern Illinois University, he studied with Henry Loew of the St. Louis Symphony and played with the St. Louis Philharmonic. After a year with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, Terry was principal bassist with the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra.
Lori Lovato, clarinet
Principal clarinetist Lori Lovato also performs with New Mexico Philharmonic, Sphinx Symphony, Performance Santa Fe, San Juan Symphony, Opera Southwest, Alter Ego Jazz Trio, and is a founding member of the New Mexico Woodwind Quintet. Stefanie Przybylska, bassoon
Principal bassoonist Stefanie Przybylska has appeared as a featured soloist in works by Mozart and John Williams. In addition to her role with The Symphony, Stefanie has performed with the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival, Music in the Mountains in Durango, Colorado, and with Chatter Sunday in Albuquerque. She co-founded and directed the Bosque Bassoon Band.
Brynn Marchiando, trumpet
Brynn Marchiando lives and works in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a performer and music educator. Inspired by her grandfather, who was also a trumpet player, she completed her undergraduate degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Denver Lamont School of Music, and her graduate degree in Trumpet Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music.
Byron Herrington, trombone
Byron Herrington has lived in Albuquerque since 1981, but was born and raised in the dusty flatlands near Lubbock, Texas. After almost completing a trombone performance degree at the University of Oklahoma, Byron won a position with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, where he performed and occasionally conducted for over 30 years. He is a founding member of the New Mexico Philharmonic.
Dave Tolen, percussion
David Tolen is principal percussionist of The Santa Fe Symphony. He performs regularly at the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival and as a timpanist with the Santa Fe Pro Musica chamber orchestra. Tolen has also collaborated with the Santa Fe New Music Ensemble. A percussionist with The Santa Fe Opera since 2000, Tolen’s passion for opera has taken him to Florida, where he was principal percussionist with Sarasota Opera.
Toby Appel, narrator
Toby Appel has appeared throughout the U.S. and abroad as a recitalist, concerto soloist and chamber musician. He is a former member of the Lenox, Audubon, and Tashi quartets and has appeared at the Angel Fire, Marlboro, Mostly Mozart, Chamber Music Northwest, and more.
