Devin DeVargas, bass-baritone, brings a warm refreshing presence coupled with a resonant and commanding sound to the opera stage. Most recently, he appeared as Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro at Red River Lyric Opera, and as the Congregation Leader and Shipmaster in Lori Laitman’s The Scarlet Letter while at the University of Oklahoma.

DeVargas’ roles also include the Pirate King (The Pirates of Penzance), Le Podestat (Le docteur Miracle), Captain E.J. Smith (Titanic: A New Musical) at Eastern New Mexico University. Most recently Devin was featured as a baritone soloist with Santa Fe’s own Tri-M Millennial Music Maker Productions in scenes from The Music Man, My Fair Lady, and The Sound of Music.

DeVargas is an accomplished choral singer and soloist, currently singing with the Santa Fe Symphony Chorus and Chamber Choir and the Sangre de Cristo Chorale. He most recently was featured in the Sangre de Cristo Chorale’s concert, Windfall Light, as the soloist in Irving Fine’s Design for October. He is a member of the Cathedral Basilica de Saint Francis de Assisi Vox Anima choir. He has also been featured with the University of Oklahoma’s Men’s Glee Club and Women’s Choir as the Bass soloist in Benjamin Britten’s Rejoice in the Lamb. DeVargas has a passion for early music, participating in Schola Cantorum Oklahoma and the OU Collegium Musicum.

Originally from Nambé, New Mexico, DeVargas is excited to begin his second year at the helm of the Pojoaque Valley High School, Middle School, and Sixth Grade Academy choral programs. He received his Bachelor and Master of Music at Eastern New Mexico University and the University of Oklahoma, where he studied with Dr. Gregory Gallagher and Mark McCrory, respectively. In his free time, DeVargas composes, adding to a catalog of art songs, choral works, and orchestral/concert band works.
