Of Note

Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet premiered just before Christmas in 1789, during a benefit concert to fund pensions for widows and orphans of musicians.

Of Zhou Tian’s Viaje, the Philadelphia Inquirer wrote “[it] fused the composer’s Chinese American sensibility with the lore of ancient Spain so convincingly that the exotic flute solos … sounded like the most natural thing in the world.”

Sibelius’ En Saga may have started its life as a septet or octet for flute, clarinet, and strings—then it was scrapped or otherwise lost, but revived again years later by the composer, becoming one of his most loved orchestral scores.  The work was “re-re-imagined” as a septet in 2003 by clarinetist Gregory Barrett.
