Of Note
- Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme is seldom performed in its original version. Cellist and composer Wilhelm Fitzenhagen, who commissioned the piece, altered it significantly: removing one variation, changing the order, and rewriting some of the cello part. One of Fitzenhagen’s students wrote that when he visited Tchaikovksy, “I found him very upset, looking as though he was ill. When I asked: ‘What’s the matter with you?’ Pyotr Ilyich, pointing to the writing desk, said: ‘Fitzenhagen’s been here. Look what he’s done with my composition—everything’s been changed!’ When I asked what action he was going to take… Pyotr Ilyich replied: ‘The Devil take it! Let it stand as it is!’ ”
- Chokfi’ is the Chickasaw word for rabbit, an important symbol in Southeast American Indian cultures. The Rabbit Trickster is generally a lighthearted character featured in many children’s stories, according to the nonprofit group Native Languages of the Americas. However, like most tricksters, he is prone to humorously inappropriate behavior, particularly gluttony, carelessness, and an overinflated ego.
- Stella Sung wrote Oceana to draw attention to the ocean’s ecosystems, and their importance to both marine and human life. The piece incorporates a variety of sounds, including whales, dolphins, and seals. The work is accompanied by images filmed by Annie Crawley, who specializes in underwater photography.
