String Sextet in D Minor, “Souvenir de Florence,” op.70
The Opus 29 C Major quintet is Beethoven’s only truly original string quintet. His two other quintets, Op. 4 and Op. 104, are recast from other previous works for differing instrumentations.
Tchaikovsky named his string sextet “Souvenir de Florence” because he penned one of its main themes while visiting Florence, Italy, in 1889—a visit during which he also composed his opera The Queen of Spades.
